  • Open call for two postdoctoral research fellowships
GFM is currently offering two postdoctoral research fellowships (category BIPD in accordance with the norms and regulations of the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation FCT), of 1+1 years each, for young researchers working in any area of interest to any members of the research centre. The deadline to apply is 7 December, 2025, and to be eligible applicants must have defended their doctorate, in mathematics or a related area, in the three years prior to the deadline. More details on the exact criteria, and how to apply, are available via the link https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/388422, the call document can also be downloaded at https://ist-id.pt/download/76/bolsas-em-curso/14681/bl266-2025-ist-id.pdf. Note that those who responded to the recent call of interest will need to submit a new application (including resubmitting any relevant documents, in accordance with the list in the call document) in order for their application to be formally valid.
  • Biomathematics Afternoons
Everyone working in or around the area of biomathematics, and everyone interested in learning more about the area, is invited to attend the new Biomathematics Afternoons, a new series of meetings which will be held once every 1-2 months at Instituto Superior de Agronomia in Ajuda, Lisbon, and which are co-organised by two members of GFM. The first meeting will be in the afternoon of Friday, 14 November, and will feature a plenary seminar, an afternoon tea, and parallel discussions about topics in the area. For more information, see the event homepage at https://sites.google.com/view/tardesbiomaths/home.
  • Student research fellowship (BII) in Biomathematics
GFM is currently offering a research fellowship for bachelor and master students (bolsa de iniciação à investigação) in the area of biomathematics. The fellowship, for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 months, is offered under the usual terms for FCT fellowships at student (BII) level; the current stipend is €651,12 per month. The call will remain open until 11 November, 2025. More details, including on how to apply, can be found at the site https://ist-id.pt/recursos-humanos/bolseiros/#bolsas-ativas, under the reference BL241-2025-IST-ID.
  • Call for expressions of interest for postdoc positions
The Group of Mathematical Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico, Univ. of Lisbon, a centre of excellence in Mathematics, see https://fisica-matematica.pt/en/, launches a call for expression of interest to identify candidates for post-doctoral positions in the areas of work of our members namely: Integrable systems and geometry; Quantum mechanics and quantum gravity; Spectral theory of differential operators; Stochastic analysis and optimal transport. Positions are for 1 (+1) year, with no teaching duties. Grant: 1851 euro/month, tax exempt, plus the possibility of covering voluntary social security contributions. Based on the results of this resquest for expressions of interest, an official call for applications will be opened, predicted for the end of 2025, with a closing date in very early 2026. To be eligible, applicants will have to have defended their doctorate within three years of the closing date, that is, between very early 2023 and the beginning of 2026. Expressions of interest are to be sent to ana.cruzeiro@tecnico.ulisboa.pt until 5th October 2025 and will be kept strictly confidential. They must include a CV and a short letter of motivation with the description of the current research. The Centre is committed to increase diversity in research and welcomes application from underrepresented groups.
  • BII-Laplacians
The Spectral Theory of Differential Operators group is organising a mini-event showcasing the work of its student fellows on and around the Laplacian. The afternoon will feature short talks from its fellows, interspersed with short introductory talks from its senior members. Everyone is welcome to attend, including students. The event will take place in Room P8, second floor of the Department of Mathematics building at Instituto Superior Técnico, on Friday, 23 May, 2025, beginning at 3pm. A poster including all details of the event, including the timetable and list of talks, can be downloaded here.
  • An ode to Geometry

The workshop “An ode to Geometry”, dedicated to various facets of the geometry of ordinary differential equations, will take place from 16 to 21 September, 2024, at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal. More information is available on the homepage of the workshop.

This workshop is being organised by members of GFM and co-funded by the project GENIDE, led by Giordano Cotti.

  • Integrability and Moduli

The conference “Integrability and Moduli”, in honour of Leon Takhtajan, a satellite event of ECM2024, will take place in Lisbon from 8 to 12 July, 2024, bringing dozens of experts in mathematical physics to Portugal for a week before the congress in Seville. GFM is providing support, and several of its members are involved as organisers and participants.
